Taiwan's Tai regains world No. 1 ranking after Asia Championships win 2018-05-07
(CNA) Taiwan's Tai Tzu-ying (o) regained her world No. 1 ranking after successfully defending the Badminton Asia Championships title last weekend, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Thursday.

Tai held the top spot in the BWF's world rankings for 72 consecutive weeks, but fell to second place after a recent change in the federation's scoring system.

On Sunday, the Taiwanese player defeated Chen Yufei (B) of China 21-19, 22-20 in the women's singles final to win the 2018 Badminton Asia Championships, held in Wuhan, China, from April 24-29.

That was her second consecutive victory in the annual tournament.

Tai currently holds 87,109 career points in the BWF World Women's Singles rankings, ahead of Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, who has 86,031 points.

Yamaguchi was unable to participate in the event in Wuhan due to injury.
